The Badminton World Federation (BWF) recently announced a ban on a new type of serve known as the "new spin serve." has gained widespread attention and created a flutter in the badminton community with players attempting to master the latest technique that many believe can give an unfair advantage.
What is the New Spin Serve?
The "spin serve" was introduced by Danish doubles player
Marcus Rindshoj at the Polish Open last month. In this serve, the player
holds the cork of the shuttlecock between their thumb and middle finger and
applies a spin to it with a carrom strike motion before hitting it with the
racquet. The receiver has found it challenging to return the shuttle as it
moves unpredictably through the air, making it difficult to anticipate its trajectory
and respond accordingly.

BWF's Decision to implement
interim Ban
BWF put an interim ban until May 29, 2023. The interim ban takes effect
at all BWF-sanctioned international tournaments, including the BWF Sudirman CupFinals 2023 which is going on now.
The amendment to 9.1.5 of Section 4.1 of the BWF Laws of Badminton now
states that the server shall release the shuttle without adding spin, and the
server’s racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle. Any failure to
adhere to the experimental variation to the law will result in a fault being
called.
BWF President Poul-Erik
Høyer said: "BWF welcomes players creating innovation in our game and
experimenting with techniques to create competitive advantage on court.
“However, we have received
several points of feedback from within the badminton community, including the
BWF Athletes’ Commission, expressing that this ‘spin serve’ could have a
negative impact on the game. It’s also been observed internally that this ‘spin
serve’ has many similar characteristics to the ‘Sidek serve’ (named after
Rashid Sidek), which is not allowed.”
"An expert panel, therefore, recommended disallowing the 'spin serve' until further consultation could take place with the membership at the upcoming BWF AGM on 27 May 2023.
Conclusion
The interim ban by the BWF reflects the need to carefully consider and evaluate new techniques in order to maintain fairness and integrity in badminton. It remains to be seen how the issue will be addressed and whether the "spin serve" will ultimately be allowed or prohibited in future tournaments.
